EDUCATION | 2009/2010 Design Excellence Lecture Series Speakers Announced
In its second season of Monday night lectures, the Design Excellence Lecture Series centers around the theme of The Intentional City. This year's series will begin on Monday, November 23rd with Terry Schwarz, AICP, Senior Planner with the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative at Kent State University, Alan Greenberger, FAIA, Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission and Acting Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development will speak on February 22nd, and Robert Freedman, Director of Urban Design for the City of Toronto will round out the season on April 19th. GRANT | Preserving the New Hazlett Theater
The New Hazlett Theater, located in the historic Carnegie Library at Allegheny Center, recently received a $10,000 Design Fund grant. The grant will enable the New Hazlett Theater to create a master document of specific architecture and preservation needs for the 120 year old building that will inform future plans and possible expansion of the theater's programs.
UPDATE l PARK(ing) Day Pleases Pittsburgh
On Friday, September 18th, Pittsburgh celebrated its second annual PARK(ing) Day. The CDCP, along with 18 other nonprofits, individuals, and businesses created one-day parks in parking spaces around the city to engage passersby in thinking about public space. PARK(ing) Day, originating in San Francisco in 2005, now is created independently by groups of artists, activists and citizens on an international scale. Thanks to Emily Craig of the Mattress Factory and the CDCP's Andrea Lavin for spearheading another successful PARK(ing) Day in Pittsburgh. Click here to see photos from this year's event.
ON THE ROAD l Surdna Grantees Travel to Cleveland
Tom Bartnik, Director of Design and Planning, is heading to Cleveland, OH to attend a retreat on October 19-21 sponsored by the Surdna Foundation. The purpose of the retreat is for grantees to share best practices, exchange ideas, get feedback on strategies, learn about new trends in the field, and to connect with their peers. Based in New York City, the Surdna Foundation provides funding to help imporove cities that are experiencing disinvestment, and help to strengthen community revitalization efforts.
REGIONAL | PPND and CDCP Working in Fayette County
The Community Foundation of Fayette County has engaged the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND) and CDCP to provide professional services in the implementation of the Fayette Community Growth Fund. This strategic growth fund targets the five communities of Brownsville, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Point Marion and Uniontown, and will provide funding for pre-construction drawings. PPND and CDCP will assist in reviewing proposals from community groups.
