ADVOCACY | Terry Schwarz Opens Design Excellence Lecture Series

Terry Schwarz, AICP is the first speaker for the 2009 - 2010 Design Excellence Lecture Series. Terry is a senior planner at the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) and the director of the internationally recognized Shrinking Cities Initiative. This initiative is particularly relevant to Pittsburgh where, like Cleveland, population has declined and vacant land and buildings present a challenge. Terry advocates for a process of "planned shrinkage" as an alternative to always seeking growth. One of her innovative ideas is Pop Up City - a series of temporary events and installations held on vacant properties. Terry also recently received the Cleveland Arts Prize for Design.

The cost for individual lectures is $20, and includes the lecture, a panel discussion, and a reception. A season subscription is available for $45, a 25% savings! For tickets please visit the CDCP website or call 412.391.4144.

ON THE ROAD l Architecture Devotees Assemble in Chicago

From November 5th-7th, CDCP President and CEO, Anne-Marie Lubenau, AIA, attended the  first annual conference of the Association of Architecture Organizations (AAO) in Chicago. The AAO's mission aims to create a network of like-minded organizations who educate the public about architecture and the built environment.

UPDATE l Peebles Square Ribbon Cutting

In 2006, the nonprofit Action-Housing and other partners in the Wilkinsburg Community, engaged the CDCP to provide community design assistance in connection with their Peebles Square Project, a residential renovation and  infill housing project in Wilkinsburg. The goal of the project was to develop a feasibility plan for the creation of 20 units of new and rehabilitated housing that met the needs of the community. The CDCP assisted Action-Housing with developing and implementing a community design process that engaged local stakeholders in the project, thus improving the quality of its design and increasing neighborhood support of the plan. A first ribbon cutting took place on June 27th 2008, to announce  the completion of five rehabilitated homes. A second ribbon cutting, to celebrate the completion of five, new single-family homes, took place on Thursday, November 5th. For more information, please visit the Action-Housing website.
