UPDATE | Three Rivers Heritage Trail Designated as National Recreation Trail
The Three Rivers Heritage Trail has been designated as a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior and National Park Service. This designation recognizes trail systems that are regionally significant and improve the quality of life for citizens. The Three Rivers Heritage trail is a bicycle and pedestrian pathway that runs 22 miles along both banks of the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio rivers; connecting dozens of neighborhoods and communities to the riverfront and offering opportunities for recreation and alternative transportation throughout our region.
Friends of the Riverfront(FOR) received a CDCP Design Fund grant in 1991 for preliminary designs for North and South Side trail segments and a North Shore segment opened 2 years later. Additionally, a 2003 Design Fund grant to FOR helped complete the South Side trail from South 18th Street to Station Square.
