ADVOCACY| Design Excellence Lecture Series Continues with Alan Greenberger, FAIA
The 2009-10 Design Excellence Lecture Series continues on Monday February 22nd as we welcome architect and planner Alan Greenberger, FAIA. Prior to joining the Planning Commission, Alan spent 34 years in private practice during which time he was the principal designer on numerous urban design and planning projects. As an advocate for design, Alan also co-founded the Design Advocacy Group of Philadelphia - a proactive, independent public voice for design quality in architecture and planning in the Philadelphia region. Through his numerous years of private practice as well as his advocacy work, Alan is sure to bring experience and a keen perspective to Pittsburgh.
The cost for individual lectures is $20, and includes the lecture, a panel discussion, and a reception. For tickets please visit the CDCP website or call 412.391.4144
PARTNERSHIP | Mayor's Institute on City Design to be Held in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh will host the Mayors' Institute on City Design on February 10-12. Eight mayors from Midwestern cities and eight design professionals will meet, present, and discuss problems specific to each city and potential solutions. Because many cities in the Midwest have experienced population and job loss, the overall theme of the session will be creative design and development strategies for "cities in transition," including strategies for vacant land, blighted and abandoned properties, and brownfield redevelopment. Carnegie Mellon University's Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) and the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP) were responsible for attracting the Mayors' Institute to Pittsburgh. The RCI and the CDCP will co-sponsor an invitation-only reception and dinner on February 10th for local leaders and the MICD participants. The evening will include a panel discussion on "Design and the City" moderated by Anne-Marie Lubenau, CDCP President and CEO, and will include Maurice Cox of the Natural Endowment for the Arts, Rob Stephany of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, and Saleem Ghurbril of Pittsburgh Promise. The two day closed door working sessions that follow the opening dinner will be hosted by the RCI and moderated by Donald Carter, RCI Director. Ms. Lubenau and two faculty members of Carnegie Mellon University, Vivian Loftness and Deborah Lange, will be among the eight members of the resource team attending the working sessions.
THANK YOU | 2009 CDCP Supporters
Great neighborhoods and buildings are inspiring. They are a source of both community pride and real, lasting economic value. Pittsburgh would not be the place it is today without the support of numerous individuals who have contributed to the CDCP. The CDCP wishes to thank its 2009 supporters for their generosity and continued enthusiasm for creating great places in Pittsburgh!
