EDUCATION  l  The Story of 101 Urban Salvations Comes to Pittsburgh

Esteemed thought-leader, author, and Harvard professor Margaret Crawford recently convened an urban planning studio using the premise: "Cambridge Could Be A Better Place to Live If...." Her students canvassed the city and interviewed as many different people as possible. The result of their effort is 101 Urban Salvations, which presents innovative and visionary proposals that take a small-scale, accumulated approach rather than a massive retooling of the city. In these times of economic restraint and reduced expectations, this approach is responsive and flexible, and isn't an all or nothing method. Margaret Crawford will present 101 Urban Salvations at Point Park's University Center on Monday, February 16th as the second of this season's Design Excellence Lecture Series. The cost is $20, and includes the lecture, a panel discussion, and a reception. For tickets call 412.391.4144.

UPDATE  l  Ribbon Cutting at 700 Euclid Avenue

Through a collaborative effort of the Philadelphia, State College and Pittsburgh community design centers, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) instituted the Excellence in Design Initiative - a pilot program developed to promote design excellence and innovation in affordable housing. Eighteen months ago, East Liberty Development, Inc. (ELDI) and S & A Homes received $600,000 as one of three state-wide PHFA Excellence in Design grants for new, green design, in-fill housing in East Liberty. The CDCP's Jason Vrabel, who was part of the group that developed the pilot program for PHFA, provided technical assistance. This "City House for the Next 100 Years" project ribbon cutting of the first houses on Euclid Avenue is scheduled for Thursday, January 29th. Congratulations!

WINNERS  l  Post-Gazette's Renovation Inspiration Contest

Eight finalists, representing home renovation projects from Canonsburg to Fox Chapel, were selected in December by Tara Nelson from the CDCP, reporters from the Post-Gazette HOME section, and others.  Submissions were separated by large and small projects, and then judged for appropriateness, functionality and imagination. Winners and runners-up have been showcased in the Post-Gazette feature stories this month.
