EDUCATION l 2009-2010 Design Excellence Lecture Series
Planning is underway for the second season of the CDCP's Design Excellence Lecture Series (DELS). The theme for 2009/2010 is "The Intentional City." Speakers will be civic leaders and public officials who are accomplished in their fields and have successfully embraced good planning, design, and community engagement as tools for economic development and quality of life enhancement in their cities. The successful event format from the inaugural season will be continued this year. The guest speaker will present a lecture, followed by a moderated panel discussion that includes local design practitioners, civic officials, and community representatives. The lecturer, panelists, and audience members will end the evening with a reception for a final hour of idea exchange. The 09/10 DELS events will be held again at the University Center at Point Park University. Sponsors to date for this season's lecture series are the Laurel Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND). A subscription for all three lectures is $45; tickets to individual events are $20 each. For more information, contact Danielle Robinson at drobinson@cdcp.org or 412.391.4144.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT l The Pittsburgh Foundation Grant
The Pittsburgh Foundation awarded a grant of $25,000 to the CDCP to expand its civic engagement work such as presenting workshops to expand the understanding of planning, community design, and development; and developing social media communication to reach a broader audience. Funding for these efforts was provided by the Margaret MacCann and Rose MacCann Memorial Fund, the John L. McKenna Fund, the Philip M. LeMaistre Fund, the Lawrenceville Neighborhood House Fund, and the Fannie A. Lawrence Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation.
OUTREACH l Lancaster County Envision Event on Design Advocacy
As part of its effort to advance design, the Lancaster County Planning Commission is hosting a presentation by Philadelphia Director of City Planning, Alan Greenberger, followed the next morning by a panel discussion by Mr. Greenberger and design professionals. Anne-Marie Lubenau, AIA, the CDCP's president & ceo, is one of the scheduled panelists at the December 10 & 11 event at Urban Place, a recently renovated mixed-use adaptation of a turn of the 20th century industrial complex in Lancaster.
GREENSPACE l Second Annual PARK(ing) Date Set
Pittsburgh's second annual PARK(ing) Day is scheduled for Friday, September 18. A one-day, international event, PARK(ing) Day engages artists, activists, and citizens to transform parking spots into temporary public parks, or "PARK(ing)" spaces. The CDCP, Mattress Factory, and the Office of Public Art are partnering to engage Pittsburgh's design, arts, and non-profit communities in this effort to get Pittsburghers thinking differently about how we use public space. To involve your organization, contact Andrea Lavin at the CDCP or Emily Craig at the Mattress Factory.
